In 1925–1926, the Saudi authorities (under King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud) demolished all shrines and domes in Jannat al-Baqi.
This included the shrine over Imam Hasan’s grave.
Why was it destroyed?
The destruction was based on Wahhabi religious beliefs, which oppose building structures over graves and consider them a form of innovation (bidʿah) or potential idolatry.
There were also political reasons, including asserting control over the holy cities.
